Maliyamungu Gift Muhande

The works presented in this exhibition are partially drawn from Kobikisa, Maliyamungu Gift Muhande’s first solo exhibition in New York, originally presented at ISCP in 2022 and curated by Lauren Wolchik. Kobikisa—a Lingala word meaning “to heal”—features large-scale body prints and an immersive video installation centered on tenderness, ancestral memory, and Black feminine care. The video centerpiece documents collaborative healing sessions with practitioners at Life Wellness Center in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. The accompanying prints, detailed below—including Mie D’or (Crumb of Gold), Entry to Remembrance, Aksan yo nan Liberasyon (Accents of Liberation), and Tendresse (Tenderness)—were created through counterclockwise rituals and clay-based self-impressions, rooted in Congolese traditions. Together, these works explore the body as a vessel of both trauma and lineage—a site of remembrance, resistance, and reimagination.
